REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUBANG - About 4,000 out of 7,300 ducks in four villages in Subang, West Java, are positively infected by avian influenza or H5N1. Staff of Animal Husbandry Department immediately cull the infected animals.
"The ducks infected by avian influenza are living in high traffic Java North Coast Road. Poultry living within the area cannot be fully freed from avian influenza as the track is a trade route of poultry from West Java to East Java," the Head of Animal Health Department of Subang, Agus Sugema, said on Thursday.
The virus of avian influenza spreads through air and poultry manure. The extermination of 4,000 ducks is expected to cut the chain of contagion. The breeders are also asked to isolate their sick poultry for a month.
