REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Regulatory uncertainty was among three challenges to develop Islamic banking in Indonesia, Director General for Haj and Umrah at Ministry of Religious Affairs, Anggito Abimanyu, said in Islamic Economy Seminar on Tuesday.

"The first problem is the regulatory uncertainty on Islamic banking," Abimanyu said, added that commercial banking grew rapidly while Islamic banking's growth was left behind. He said that the competition between Islamic and commercial banking were unfair since the beginning.

Second problem is lack of human resources with extensive skills and knowledge on Islamic banking. The other issue is lack of study program on Islamic economy. Abimanyu mentioned that even the two biggest Economic Faculties in Indonesia, Universitas Indonesia (UI) and Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM), did not have Faculty of Islamic Economy.
