MUI to open Islam-Confucianism dialogue

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) and Indonesian High Council for Confucianism Religion (Matakin) will hold an inter religious dialogue between Islam and Confucianism on August 23-25, 2013 in Jakarta.

"This meeting aims to discuss our common ground in religious harmony. Muslims and Confucianists can work together and develop peaceful culture in community," Chairman of MUI, Slamet Effendy Yusuf said on Wednesday.

Yusuf said Muslims and Confucianists contribution was important and both groups were rarely involved in physical conflict. He also underlined the important of sending message of peace to build civilization. 

Islam and Confucianism have shared history through Silk Road, a network that demostrated closed cooperation between both groups. The dialogue will focus on civilization and peace in Asia and the world. 

The event will be attended by delegations from Islam and Confucianism of Asian Countries, Australia and America. This first high level meeting is expected to pioneer Islam and Confucianism's dialogue at international level.
