REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Minister of Agriculture Suswono stated on Monday that the country's meat production this year increased to 430 thousand tonnes from 420 thousand tonnes in 2012.

"But the countrys need for meat this year (2013) has also reached 549,700 tonnes and it suffered meat deficit because the needs exceeded the local meat production," the minister noted in a reflection on food and agriculture 2013 and prospect in 2014, on Monday. 

With the deficit of meat production, the price of meat at home increased. Indonesia then turned to import of live cattle and frozen beef to overcome the problem, the government allowed the import.
