REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - State owned train operator, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) recorded profit 560 billion IDR in 2013. The profit had increased from 425 billion IDR in 2012, said President Director of KAI, Ignatius Jonan on Wednesday.
"Majority of profit was dominated by delivery of goods," Jonan said.
Speaking about this year's profit target, Jonan declined to go into detail. He explained, "Simply just do it. Profit is not the main target, but improvement of our service is.
Jonan estimated the amount of goods delivered by KAI would increase five million tonnes per year, calculated based on the company's capacity.
According Statistics Indonesia (BPS)'s data, number of goods delivered by train in 2013, including KAI throughout Indonesia reached 2.3 million tonnes or increased 2.85 percent from previous year, dominated by Sumatra region (1.6 million tonnes).
Number of train passengers in Greater Jakarta will increase to 1.2 million passengers in 2014, while the long distance passengers also increase five to 10 percent. KAI has departed 240 million passengers in 2013.
While train passengers in Java and Sumatra reached 20.9 million passengers per January 2014 or rose 0.37 percent from previous month. Most of them came from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi reaching 15 million passengers or 71.65 percent of total passengers.
