REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Incumbent governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and his running mate Djarot Syaiful Hidayat were in the lead at the time when 97.6 percent of the votes in the Jakarta gubernatorial election had been counted here, Wednesday.

The pair received 45.13 percent of the votes, while their rivals Agus-Sylvi grabbed 16.71 percent, and Anies-Sandi, 40.16 percent, according to the Saiful Mujani Research Center (SMRC).

Basuki-Djarot and Anies-Sandi raced neck-to-neck during vote counting until almost the end.

Only three pairs contested the election, with Basuki-Djarot being supported by the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle, Golkar, Hanura, and Nasdem. Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono-Sylviana Murni is supported by the Democrats Party, PPP, PKB, and PAN, while Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno by the Gerindra and PKS.

A run-off election will be held if no pair manages to secure a majority.
