REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla here, Friday, reminded regional and resort police chiefs of the dangers of technology. He said misuse of technology could trigger conflicts in the run-up to the 2018 simultaneous regional head elections and 2019 general elections.

"The misuse of technology can lead to conflicts due to the flourishing social media that spreads negative issues and hoaxes everywhere," Kalla remarked while giving directives at the Jakarta Police High School on Friday.

He cautioned that the speed of disseminating information through social media today can trigger the circulation of unconfirmed news and lead to hate speeches among the public.

"Today, it is technology that causes the most problems, which can be in the form of hate speeches and hoaxes, among others. That is certainly what we have to work on with all the systems in our government to tackle," Kalla stated.

Hence, the vice president has requested all police officers across the country to stay abreast of the developments in information technology, so as to overcome the spread of hoaxes and hate speeches to prevent conflicts.

"The police must become professional, modern, and reliable and master technology," he added.

According to Kalla, religious differences and political views often lead to social conflicts.

"Social conflicts can also be followed by religious conflicts due to political problems. Our elections in the past could cause problems, but now, it is much better," Kalla explained.
