REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono officially announced International Labor Day celebrated every May 1 as national holiday.
"I announce May 1 as national holiday and it will be launched through Presidential Decree," Yudhoyono said on his Twitter account on Tuesday.
While visiting a factory in Surabaya, East Java on May, President said he had thought to make May 1 as national holiday. Previously, Indonesian Trade Union Confederation (KSPI), Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions Alliance Congress (KASBI), State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Union and also Indonesian Workers' Assembly (MPBI) routinely held massive demonstrations every May 1 to demand their rights. This year there were 600 thousand workers rallied across Indonesia. About 150 thousands of them work in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi.
