REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) will not seek a coalition partner to form the next government if the coalition has no clear concept, its deputy secretary general, Fahri Hamzah, said.
PKS had taken a lesson from its experience since the transitional period in 1998 which showed that a coalition of political parties had always failed, he said here on Saturday.
"PKS is preparing a concept of a good and right coalition, according to the existing administrative system. All coalitions which led to transitional government were not successful. Therefore, we will not follow other parties' suits to seek coalition partners if their concept of coalition is unclear," he said.
Further, PKS had not held talks with other parties because it would not meet with them if their concept of a coalition remained unclear, he said.
"Right now, we are focusing on the ballot count only and trying to keep our vote tally intact," he said.
Without a clear idea about a coalition, the government's development plan would become unclear, he said.
A coalition must be able to address problems which would theoretically cast a shadow on the formation of a government, specifically the problems of a presidential and multiparty system, he said.
PKS was considering two options -- leading a coalition or being in the opposition -- since it did not want to become a victim, he said.
"We have always been accused of starting a commotion while, in fact, we were a victim of a misguided coalition system," he said.
