In Picture: Republika's awards for five Agent of Change in 2013

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Republika awarded the title "Agent of Change" to five inspiring figure in "Agent of Change Awards 2013". The tittle were awarded during a ceremony on Monday, April 21, 2014.

Those five figures are national football coach U-19, Indra Sjafri; pioneer of Garbage Clinical Insurance, Gamal Albinsaid; a actor who popularizes pencak silat, Iko Uwais; conceptor of math methed, Ridwan Hasan Saputra; and Chairman of Indonesian Corruption Eradication Commission, Abraham Samad.

 

Abraham Samad

Born in Makassar on November 27, 1966, Samad was rasied as an orphan at the age of 8. It was his mother who taught him abut integrity. 

Samad recalled, one day he brougt home some chalks from school. He was surprised to find his mother was angry and asked him to return the chalks.  

"Wrap the chalks back and don't you dare use them," his mom told Samad.

"No matter what, don't take anything that doesn't belong to us," Samad cited his mother's advice.  

His integrity then brings his carreer to be KPK's chairman for 2011-2015. The commission work hard and successfully revealed some big corruption cases. 

Yet, he believes that teanwork is behind those success stories.

 

Indra Sjafri

Sjafri lighten up the spirit of Indonesians when U-19 National Team performed at ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Cup 2013 and defeated Malaysia in final match of Group B. The team would be eliminated from the tournament if it lost the match. 

One of his controversial statements echoed before Indonesia played with South Korean team. "Please tell to South Korean team, we will defeat them. Everything can be defeated, except God," Sjafri said.

This statement lighted up the spirit of National Team in October last year. Many people praised him, but many people also sneered him. Sjafri proved it when Indonesia defeated South Korea with scores of 3-2. Those who previously considered Sjafri as an arrogant coach began to change their minds and said that Sjafri was an optimistic figure.

"We must love Indonesia," he stated.

Republika awards him with Agent of Change 2013 tittle as he inspired Indonesians to believe that they are a great nation. Indonnesias, he said, must be very optimitic. His approach steals Republika's attention which in turn awards him as Agent of Change 2013.

 

Gamal Albinsaid 

According to Albinsaid, waste management in Indonesia still uses conventional method. The data show that 35 percent of waste is to be burnt down, seven percent of waste to be stockpiled, and only 2.1 percent waste is managed properly. And the remaining waste usually left unused.     

Such situation inspired Albinsaid to spur social change. he young medical doctor then set up Indonesia Medika to raise public awarenes on waste management. Anybody who wants to have health insurance must hand over waste worth 10 thousand IDR.

"In principle it's like health invesntment," the recipient of Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Awards at the Buckingham palace, said.

His business, Indonesia Media, may be well known for the unique health insurance. In fact, he also invented "smart belt for babies", Mobile Hospital, Mother Happiness Center, Care For Mother (website on pregnancy in android application), and K-POP which consists of health services at boarding schools, markets, innovation clinic and telemedicine. Those services open wider public access to health service. 

 

Iko Uwais

Born as Uwais Qorny (31 years), the actor has introduced Indonesian martial arts, pencak silat, into international stage. He played pencak silat on his three movies; Merantau, The Raid and The Raid 2; have stolen international attention. 

Those movies have inspired so many Indonesian young generation to learn pencak silat. Uwais admitted people usually underestimate pencak silat and many of them labelled it as an old fashioned martial arts. His dedication to Indonesian martial arts leads him to be awarded as Agent of Change 2013 by Republika. 

"Praise the Lord, today there are many young people start to learn pencak silat," Uwais, who learned pencak silat since he was 10, said.

 

 

Ridwan Hasan Saputra

Saputra teaches math, especially on math olympiad and many of his students successfully won math contests in Indonesia as well as abroad. 

Saputra opened Math and Science Educatioan clinic (KPM) in 2001. He invented a method which using daily problems into his class. His method was proved to be effective to make his students understand math well. 

Suprisingly, he never sets any course tuition rate since 2003. He rather asks his student to pay contribution voluntarily. Instead, he is ready to help if any of his students need financial assistance. His effforts steal the President's attention. Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono then awarded him Satyalancana Wirakarya medal in 2007. Republika then awards him the tittle Agent of Change 2013 on April 21, 2014.
