REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Puan Maharani, the chief of the election success team of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), was hopeful that the Jokowi-JK pair will remain committed and be clean leaders.
On Monday, Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Jusuf Kalla were formally declared as the presidential and vice presidential candidates for the July 9 election.
"PDIP and supporters, PKB, Nasdem, and Hanura have officially registered them with the General Election Commission (KPU) today," Puan remarked.
Puan, who is also the PDIP associate chairman, noted that Jokowi and JK are yet to follow the mechanisms and rules that have been set before campaigning starts on June 10.
Joko Widodo, who is currently the Jakarta governor, and Jusuf Kalla, a former vice president, registered themselves at the KPU on Monday after declaring themselves as presidential and vice presidential candidates in the company of many party members earlier that day.
The KPU has opened registrations for presidential and vice presidential candidates until 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
On the same day, Jokowi's rival Prabowo Subianto from the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra) also declared his presidential candidacy with Hatta Rajasa.
Prabowo is a retired lieutenant general and also former army's special forces commander, while Hatta Rajasa who is from the National Mandate Party (PAN) is a former chief economic minister.
Prabowo-Hatta is supported by six political parties: Gerindra, PAN, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the United Development Party (PPP), Golkar Party, and the Moon and Star Party (PBB).
