REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The server of the electronic Identity Card or popularly here as E-KTP project is located in Indonesia, not overseas, according to Marzan Aziz Iskandar, a senior researcher at the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT).

"As far as I know, the main server is located in the home affairs ministry while the recovery center is in Batam, under the local authorities there. So, logically, it's impossible that any e-ID data can be accessed by foreigners," Iskandar said Tuesday (18/11).

The e-ID project involved some reliable state institutions, which were also responsible for protecting the data secrecy, he noted. In addition to the home affairs ministry, the BPPT and State Cryptography Agency (Lemsaneg) are also part of the special team that handles the e-ID project. As part of managing the project, the system can be accessed by authorized persons in the home affairs ministry, BPPT, and Lemsaneg, according to Iskandar.

"The team surely has considered state sovereignty and the security aspects of our data," the former BPPT head said.

Earlier, Home Affairs Minister Tjahjo Kumolo had said the e-ID server was located overseas and hence could be accessed by foreigners. Therefore, he ordered the e-ID project to be halted for further comprehensive evaluation.

"The halt has been extended until January (2015)," Minister Kumolo told the press on Monday.

The minister also claimed that he found fake e-IDs made in China and France circulated in Indonesia.
