REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Commissioner General Budi Gunawan's status as a suspect in a corruption case revealed by the Indonesian anti-graft body on Tuesday does not affect the solidity of police institution, according to police chief.

"Our internal solidity stands unaffected despite the case. We do support President Joko Widodo's decision to nominate Com. Gen. Budi Gunawan," National Police Chief General Sutarman said here Wednesday (14/1).

Despite the Corruption Eradication Commission's announcement naming him a suspect in a bribery case on Tuesday, Budi Gunawan on Wednesday underwent a fit-and-proper test required of candidates for national police chief.

General Sutarman noted that he did not harbor any resentment at not being involved in nominating candidates for police chief, because choosing nominees was the President's prerogative.

He stressed he was ready to hand over the post anytime and to anyone who will be officially appointed.

"I am ready to be replaced, today or tomorrow. I accept it and I will do it," General Sutarman stated when asked about Budi Gunawan's case.

In another development, Budi Gunawan, the sole candidate for national police chief, told legislators here Wednesday that he was committed to developing the culture of anti-corruption within the institution of police.

"My first commitment is toward developing the culture of anti-corruption within the police institution," he told lawmakers from the commission overseeing law and human rights.

Budi Gunawan has been named suspect in a corruption case for allegedly receiving bribes through suspicious transactions.
