REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Transportation through the Directorate General of Land Transportation will conduct a ramp check to ensure that public transportation follows minimum service standards to guarantee the safety of passengers.
"An inspection trial will be held by the end of March 2015 and the services of intercity intraprovincial transportation and interprovincial transportation will be evaluated," the Transportation Ministry's Director of Land Transport Safety Gede Pasek said here on Friday.
The trial will be conducted at several bus terminals, including Kampung Rambutan in Jakarta, Tirtonadi in Surakarta, Bungur Asih in Surabaya, Amplas in Medan, Kubu in Pontianak, and Regional Daya Terminal in Makassar.
The lighting system, supporting components (such as accelerometers, mirrors, wipers, and honks), accessories, body parts, emergency response, power system, brakes, steering wheel, and tires will be inspected.
"This is a kick-off of the implementation of safety standards. We will also ensure that all drivers are physically healthy and free of drugs," Pasek added.
Transportation Minister Ignasius Jonan urged transport entrepreneurs to prioritize the safety of passengers even if it will require them to raise their ticket prices.
Safety field inspection is one of the efforts of the Ministry of Transportation to protect public transport users and reduce the number of accidents in Indonesia.
Based on the Ministry's data, 72-73 people in Indonesia are killed in road accidents every day. The accident rate in 2014 reached 95,906, of them 28,897 victims died and 136,581 sustained injuries.
