REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian National Police will deploy sniffer dogs to detect explosives to guard delegates of the Asian-African Conference (AAC) and the Asian-African Summit to be held in Jakarta and Bandung from April 19 to 24.

"There are about 13 sniffer dogs that will escort the delegation of the Asian-African Summit," Head of Special Tracking Detachment Unit of the police Commissioner Antonius Suparyadi said here on Wednesday (1/4).

Suparyadi stated that the police will deploy a number of sniffer dogs to secure locations and operational vehicles to be used by delegates.

The squad of sniffer dogs will detect explosives even on aircraft carrying the delegation.

They will include breeds such as Belgian Malinois, German Shepherds, Dutch Shepherds and Labradors.

Earlier, Director for Vital Object Security of the Jakarta Police Senior Commissioner Mulyadi Kahairani revealed that security officers will guard the ministers of participating countries, while the presidents or heads of states will be offered protection by the presidential guard forces (Paspampres).

Currently, as many as seven members of the Jakarta Police have cleared the security officer certification from the Embassy of Australia and the Embassy of the United States, Kahairani noted.

In addition, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police will conduct a "Sympathetic Operation" to support the activities of the AAC to be held in Jakarta and Bandung, West Java.

"We certainly hope the 21-day operation would support and ensure the success of the international event," Commander of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police Inspector General Unggung Cahyono said here on Wednesday.

He stated that the operation will be held from April 1 to 21 to improve the public's traffic discipline.

Cahyono added that persuasive approaches such as reprimands will be adopted during the operation with the hope that it will change the traffic condition in Indonesia.

According to the police commander, ensuring the smooth and orderly flow of traffic is important because Jakarta will be the host of the event from April 21 to 23.

The operation is also aimed at improving the traffic police's services, Cahyono stressed.

The government of the Republic of Indonesia will host the Asian-African Summit 2015 to mark the 60th anniversary of the AAC and the 10th anniversary of the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership in Jakarta and Bandung from April 22 to 24.

Some 109 Asian and African countries, along with 17 observer countries and 25 international organizations, have been invited.

A spokesman for the Foreign Affairs Ministry Arrmanatha Nasir recently remarked that some 20 events have been planned to enliven the commemoration of the AAC.

Among the events for the AAC are the Senior Officials Meeting on April 19 and the Ministerial Meeting on April 20.

The organizing committee will hold the Asian-African Business Summit on April 22 and 23.

Furthermore, heads of states will participate in the Historical Walk event on April 24, the spokesman affirmed.
