REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi has called on ASEAN member states to play a role as a driving force in developing the vision of regional security architecture.
At a retreat session of ASEAN Ministerial Meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Marsudi underscored the need to centralize ASEAN in the regional security architecture, the Foreign Ministry said in a press statement released on Wednesday.
For its part, the framework of East Asia Summit (EAS) needs to be put forward and strengthened to address common challenges in the region, she said.
In this regard, the Indonesian government proposed an EAS Statement on Enhancing Regional Maritime Cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.
On the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting, Marsudi also held bilateral talks with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi to discuss a wide range of issues related to regional stability including the South China Sea.
Both ministers agreed that keeping regional peace and stability is common interest and must be prioritized.
To that end, she asked all sides to take steps to reduce the deficit of mutual trust in the region.
The Indonesian foreign minister was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the 48th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting which was officially opened by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.
The four-day meeting which takes place at the World Trade Center (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur, will end on Thursday.
