Forest fires on Mt Ciremai spread to Pangasinan block

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- Forest fires that broke out on Mount Ciremai (3,078 meters above sea level) have spread to the Pangasinan block, which is the northeast peak of the highest volcano in West Java Province, a spokesman said.

"The forest fires started from the Sadarehe block and have reached the Pangasinan block, located at an altitude 2,800 meters above sea level. Fires are still burning at these two locations," the Section Chief of "Balai Taman Nasional Gunung Ciremai (National Parks), Hawal Widodo, said on Saturday.

Efforts to extinguish the fires had been carried out by personnel of a joint team of the Army, Police, the Regional Disaster Mitigation Board, the National Park of Mount Ciremai, volunteers and the Mount Ciremai care community.

According to Widodo, the fires started on Sunday, August 16.

In the meantime, the adviser to the Mount Ciremai care community, Linggasana Nana, said the thick smoke rising out of Mount Ciremai on Saturday morning could no longer be seen.

He also expressed hope that the forest fires will be extinguished soon.

In addition to this, around 3,000 residents of the Manis Kuningan village performed "Istisqa" prayers at the Khusnul Khatimah Islamic Boarding School hoping for heavy rain in a bid to help extinguish the forest fires.
