President inspects forest fires in Palembang

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- President Joko Widodo visited Palembang, South Sumatra, on Sunday to inspect the impact of forest fires in the region.

The President would visit the location of forest fires in the villages of Pinang Raya, Pademaran, and Sungai Batas, Pangkalan Laban, in the district of Ogan Komering Ilir, South Sumatra.

He is accompanied by Defense Forces commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, National Police chief General Badrodin Haiti, chief of the presidential staff Teten Masduki, head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Syamsul Maarif and secretary general of the ministry of forestry, Bambang Hendryono.

According to BNPB fires are currently found in South Sumatra, Riau, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan and South Kalimantan.

South Sumatra is the location of the most fires recorded at 224.
