REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Commander of Navy (TNI AL) Main Base XII/Pontianak First Admiral TNI Heru Santoso said, currently there were 14 Navy warships (KRI) which routinely patrol in Indonesian sea lanes 1.
The sea lanes have bustling traffic of ships. This is shipping corridor which is given for the sake of interest of international sailing, through Sunda Strait, Bangka Strait, Karimata Strait, with the northern boundary towards South China Sea.
"Routine patrols of 14 KRI are conducted in areas which were prone of crime, such as illegal fishing by foreign fishermen," Santoso said, in Pontianak, Wednesday (9/12).
There are three Indonesian waters that are prone for illegal fishing, because the locations are rich in fishes and other marine resources, namely Natuna waters, Arafura waters, and northern waters of North Sulawesi.
West Kalimantan waters included in zone III with Natuna, Karimata and South China Sea, with potential fishes to be caught reached one million tons per year. Various types of fishes could be found in these areas, such as tuna, mackerel and squid.
The area of West Kalimantan waters to South China Sea was 26 thousand square kilometers, covering 2,004,000 hectares of public waters, waters 26,700 hectares of aquaculture ponds, and 15,500 hectares of sea.
"The routine patrols performed in order to prevent crimes and other violations of the law. In addition, the patrols are also as anticipation of conflict in South China Sea and Natuna," he added.
