REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government would build 11 Special Needs Schools (SLB) across the country for children with disabilities, Education and Culture Minister Muhadjir Effendy said here on Tuesday. "We have to assure that these children with special needs could explore their potentials to become independent and be accepted by the society. Therefore, the ministry will give priority to widening access for these children," he added.
He stated that education should be available for all and without discrimination between general and special needs schools. The ministry has also provided incentives for inclusive schools, where children with special needs can attend general schools. "The government would give incentives for general schools which administer this inclusive school," he noted.
Meanwhile, the Director General of Elementary and High School Education Hamid Muhammad stated that currently there were 31,724 inclusive schools across Indonesia, of which 23,195 are elementary schools; 5,660 are junior high schools; and 2,869 are senior high schools.
