Indonesia condemns terror attack in Barcelona

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian government has condemned the terror attack that took place in Barcelona, Spain, on Thursday, which resulted in 13 deaths and injuries to dozens of people.

According to the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs' press statement received by Antara in Jakarta on Friday, the Indonesian government and people expressed deep sorrow and solidarity to the victims and their families affected by the terror attack.

Based on information from the Indonesia Embassy in Madrid, no information was so far available regarding the Indonesian citizens who became victims in the attack.

However, the Indonesian government again reminded its citizens, especially those in Barcelona, Spain, to raise awareness and stay abreast of the developing security situation at the places.

In addition, Indonesian citizens living in Barcelona and other areas of Spain were urged to avoid places that could become targets of terror acts.

According to the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid, some 126 Indonesian citizens lived in Barcelona, while some 1,620 Indonesian citizens resided in Spain overall.

Meanwhile, Indonesian citizens seeking help from the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid can contact the hotline of Protection of Indonesian Citizens of the Indonesian Embassy in Madrid at +34 619 31 23 80. The embassy is located at Calle de Agastia, 65, 28043, Madrid.

Earlier, some 13 people were killed and at least 50 others injured in a terrorist attack in Barcelona City on Thursday afternoon. The attack occurred at around 5 p.m. local time.

A man, who was described to have a lean body structure, drove a high-speed white van several hundred yards on Las Ramblas and attempted to hit as many people as possible.

Las Ramblas is a well-known area in Barcelona that is visited by several tourists. The area is brimming with shops, taverns, and restaurants.

The Spanish police described the incident as a terror attack and have arrested a man linked to the incident.
