REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) confirmed that he will attend the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Assembly to discuss the US' unilateral decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"It is clear that the OIC has decided to immediately convene, and I will attend the OIC Assembly," he stated at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java Province, on Thursday.

Jokowi noted that the OIC Assembly is planned to be held in Istanbul, Turkey, on Dec 13.

"The assembly will be held around Dec 13, as we have contacted almost all OIC countries to ensure it," he remarked.

He pointed out that communication with OIC countries has been carried out on an ongoing basis, so that the assembly can be held on Dec 13 in Istanbul.

The president could not ascertain whether a one-sided decision by the US to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel will have an impact on the Indonesia-US relations.

He stated that the foreign affairs minister will follow up on the US' unilateral decision.

He pointed out that his side will first attend the OIC Assembly and then a communication might be held with US President Donald Trump to discuss the matter.

"Later after attending the OIC Assembly, the most important matter is the assembly," he said.

In addition to communicating with the OIC countries, the Indonesian government has requested the UN to immediately discuss the unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel by the US government.

"The Indonesian government has urged the UN to immediately convene and respond to the unilateral recognition of the US," he noted.

Jokowi, accompanied by several ministers of the Working Cabinet and Presidential Special Staff, underscored that Indonesia strongly condemned the US' unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and has called on the US government to reconsider its decision.

The unilateral decision take by the US has violated various resolutions of the UN Security Council and General Assembly in which the US is a permanent member.

"This could destabilize global security," he remarked.

Jokowi declared that he and the people of Indonesia remain consistent in their support to the Palestinian people in fighting for their independence and rights in accordance with the mandate of Preamble to the 1945 Constitution of Indonesia.

Jokowi has also instructed the foreign affairs minister to summon the US ambassador to Indonesia to directly convey the Indonesian government's stance on the matter.
