Stop being repressive in handling hoarding of goods: Jokowi

Jokowi says hoarding goods for security stock is not a problem if inflation stable.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has asked the police to not be repressive in handling the hoarding of goods by employers. He believeed not all of them cause problems.

"I ask the National Police Chief and regional police chiefs to avoid being repressive," Jokowi remarked, when opening the National Coordination Meeting on inflation control in Jakarta, on Thursday.

The head of state noted that if inflation and prices of goods are stable, then the act of hoarding goods for security stock is not a problem.

"If there is an agent involved in hoarding goods, resulting in the increase in price, it must be dealt with," the president remarked.

He noted that stockpiling is also needed in the context of supply management, for the market mechanism to operate.

"Market mechanisms also need to be maintained. If there is damage to the market mechanisms, it should also be dealt with," he added.

During the event, which was also attended by regional heads, the president noted that the current inflation realization was good, adding that it should be made better.

"The regional heads must pay attention to the food supply, for we often get stuck in the field routine, which is a problem that is often not monitored," Jokowi revealed.

Further, he added that if the supply is lacking, the regional heads should check the area where it is surplus.

On the occasion, the president also highlighted the problem of inter-regional trade that needs attention.

He also asked the heads of regions to open opportunities for the amount of investment in tourism sector, especially areas where tourism is well known.
