REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The Surabaya city government in East Java is considering to develop Tunjungan area into one of the city's historical tourist sites because it had historical values during the Dutch colonial rule.
As the only Indonesian city dubbed a heroes city, Surabaya has many areas which carry historical values, Head of the Surabaya City Culture and Tourism Office Wiwiek Widyawati said here on Thursday.
"One of them is Tunjungan area. We are paying great attention to any effort to revive Tunjungan area," she said.
The city government managed to revive the past atmosphere at Tunjungan Street through a Tunjungan Art Festival some time ago. The area which was declared culture reserve in 1996 is now in the process of evolving into one of the city's historical tourist destinations.
"Right now the object which has successfully been preserved is Siola building. In the future, we will preserve other objects around Tunjungan area," she said.
She said the city government is in the process of turning Tunjungan area into one of the city's historical tourist sites. This means that economically, the area can be taken advantage of without ignoring its historical values.
