REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BENGKULU -- The flower of the world's tallest flowering plant Amorphophallus gigas, four meters tall, will blossom in a breeding place in Kepahiang, Bengkulu, Sumatra. "In our estimate, the flower of the plant will blossom in two or three days. It is four meters tall," Holodin, the owner of the breeding place in the village of Tebat Monok, Kepahiang, said on Thursday.

Amorphophallus gigas is locally known as bunga bangkai (Carrion Flower ) as it issues unpleasant smell. Bunga bangkai is an endemic flowing plant in Bengkulu beside Rafflesia arnoldii.

In the 3 hectare breeding place near the protected forest of Bukit Daun, two hours away by car from the city of Bengkulu, Holidin also grew three other species of Amorphophallus, including Amorphophallus titanum, Amorphophallus variabilis and Amorphophallus paeonifolius. "This is the third Amorphophallus gigas to blossom in this breeding place," he said.

Earlier, in the same location Amorphophallus gigas, 4.1 meters tall, blossomed in in March 2016. The first gigas type to blossom in that place was in March 2013 with plant three meters tall. Holidin said he did not ask visitors to pay any but hopes them to give donation voluntarily he needed to tend the garden with rare plants.
