REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A suicide bombing rocked the grounds of the Makassar Cathedral Church on Sunday. This bomb attack was carried out when the church congregation was about to finish the service.
The perpetrators of the explosion of a church in Makassar were allegedly conducted by two people using a motorbike. Head of the Public Relations Division of the National Police, Inspector General of Police, Argo Yuwono, said that the two of them rode together on an automatic motorbike and detonated themselves in front of the gate of the Makassar Cathedral Church.
"We received information that there were two people riding on two-wheeled vehicles bearing the DD 5984 MD plate, allegedly by two people, which then caused an explosion in front of the gate of the Makassar cathedral church," Argo said in a virtual conference on Sunday (28/3 ).
Initially, the perpetrators would enter the courtyard or church gate. It so happened that at that time the congregation had finished praying and left the church.
"The church security prevented two people from entering and then there was an explosion," he said.
Argo explained, from the results of information in the field, a wrecked vehicle and several body parts had been found.
The findings then became evidence of investigations carried out by the police. However, the police have not been able to confirm the sex of the two perpetrators.
The suicide bombing at the Makassar Cathedral Church killed one person and injured 14 others. One of the alleged perpetrators was the suicide bomber.
Argo Yuwono said that at least 14 people were injured as a result of this explosion. The victim, who came from church security and congregants, has now received medical treatment.
A total of three victims were rushed to the Stela Maris Hospital in Makassar. All three suffered wounds to the neck, chest, face, hands and feet. Meanwhile, the victim from the security forces suffered injuries to his stomach and head.
Seven other victims were placed in the Academic Hospital. He said they were hurt by splinters. They suffered wounds on their feet, calves, thighs and currently treatment is being done.
"Meanwhile, four other people were treated at Pelamonia Hospital due to splinters on the thighs, calves, ankles and also on the face," he said.
