REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia is still facing low inflation at the begining of the year amid the corona pandemic. March inflation was lower than inflation in the previous month.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) stated that the inflation rate in March 2021 was 0.08 percent. The inflation rate has decreased from February 2021 of 0.10 percent and March 2020 which reached 0.10 percent.

Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics, BPS Setianto, explained that with this inflation rate, the annual inflation rate (year on year / yoy) was 1.37 percent while calendar year inflation (year to date / ytd) was 0.44 percent.

"Monthly inflation continues to decline, as well as annual inflation," Setianto said in a press conference, Thursday (1/4).

Of the 90 cities of the consumer price index (CPI), 58 cities experienced inflation. The rest, 32 cities recorded deflation.

The highest inflation occurred in Jayapura, Papua, at 1.07 percent. The highest deflation was in Baubau, Southeast Sulawesi, at minus 0.99 percent.

Viewed from the expenditure category, inflation in March was dominated by inflation in the food, beverage and tobacco category. Inflation in this group amounted to 0.10 percent and contributed to inflation up to 0.40 percent.
