REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- One of the important prayers in the month of Ramadan apart from fasting is the taraweeh prayer, which is done after the evening prayer. taraweeh prayers are very special and important for Muslims who want to do them during Ramadan.

Ustadz Saifuddin Aman Al Damawy in his book "Ramadan Dishes" said that according to the law of fiqh, taraweeh prayer is not mandatory. However, because it only exists in the month of Ramadan, the philosophy of taraweeh prayer is extraordinary, like the philosophy of Ramadan.

Ustadz Saifuddin ensured that the taraweeh prayer was so special, so if there is no urgent matter or there is a greater need, try not to leave the taraweeh prayer. How great is the virtue of taraweeh prayer, as the Prophet Muhammad SAW said:

"From Abu Hurairah ra that Rasulullah SAW said: Whoever establishes the taraweeh prayer with full faith and hope, his sins are forgiven." (Reported by Al Bukhari).

Allah forgives the sins of those who establish taraweeh prayers. Do we know what forgiveness means here?

Ustaz Saifuddin said that forgiveness is not only the elimination of sins, but it is a question of determining for the future. If we can't get Allah's forgiveness then the future must be bleak.

Sin is a source of chaos in life, a source of life problems, a source of disease, a source of disasters and a source of slander. Sin has its bad consequences and negative side effects that are too big, making life unhealthy.

Therefore, Ustadz H Saifuddin invited Muslims to perform taraweeh prayers every Ramadan night. taraweeh prayer is a prayer for fun as intended by Rasulullah SAW.

It is very unfortunate if you consider taraweeh prayer as a burden, because the cycles are many and maybe the reading is long.

Taraweeh prayers will open the door to Allah's forgiveness. Those who are given the forgiveness of Allah will have a happy life, sustainable success, and be rich in abundance.

There are many rewards for praying the taraweeh. The Prophet said: “Whoever stands for prayer (the night prayer) during Ramadan with iman (faith), hoping for rewards, then all his/her previous sins will be forgiven.”(Bukhari and Muslim)

Additionally, as the rewards for good deeds are multiplied during the month of Ramadan, the rewards for Taraweeh are even greater. The Prophet said: “Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time, and whoever discharges an obligatory deed in (this month) shall receive the reward of performing seventy obligations at any other time.”(Narrated by Ibn Khuzaymah)

How many number of rakats of taraweeh prayer?

According to a Hadith from Sahih Al Bukhari, taraweeh prayer is eight rakats. The Prophet Muhammad  led the taraweeh prayer for eight rakats. Taraweeh is prayed in sets of two rakats each, in the same way as you would pray your normal. The shortest is two rakats and the longest is 20 rakats. However, during the time of Caliph Omar bin Abdulaziz (717 to 720 AD), the people of Medina observed the taraweeh prayer for 36 rakats.
