REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Vietnam's Deputy Foreign Minister Le Luong Minh has officially inaugurated as the new Secretary General of ASEAN on Wednesday, succeeded Surin Pitsuwan. Minh was nominated as the ASEAN Secretary General since April 2012.
The 61-year-old Minh said that he would consistently continue ASEAN mission to unite all countries in the region which struggle for peace, economic development, cooperation and integration. He promises that he will be a strong leader for the next five year to guarantee that ASEAN can fulfil its commitment and target. Despite challenges, he believes that ASEAN will win.
The outgoing ASEAN Secretary General, Surin Pitsuwan, believes that Minh can become a good leader. "He has a great preparation. He also has the quality needed," Pitsuwan said.
Minh is a career diplomat, who became Vietnamese Ambassador to United Nations (UN) in New York City since February 17, 2004. He held this office from 1995 to 1997 for the UN institutions in Geneva and as a deputy in New York City from 1997 to 1999. Minh becomes the 13th Secretary General of ASEAN.
