“Population growth and domestic consumption will increase, characterized by a shift to more protein-rich diets, are compelling the public and private sectors to work together to meet the food needs of tomorrow,” Chairman of APEC Policy Partnership on Food Security, Han Jizhi said in a written statement received by Republika on Thursday.
Agricultural officials and industry representatives from the region, who met this week in Qingdao, underscored the importance of advancing innovative development within the sector to keep pace with changing regional and global conditions and meet long-term food security requirements.
APEC economies account for about 40 percent of the world’s population which is expected to jump from 7.2 billion today to 9.6 billion by 2050, according to the United Nations. It is estimated that food production would need to be increased by 70 percent to meet demand at that time.
