REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KABUL - As the recounting of votes cast in June 14 Afghan presidential runoff is continuing, President Hamid Karzai has said that this militancy-plagued country should have new president and new government by the end of August.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday, spokesman for Afghan election commission Noor Mohammad Noor said that 45 percent of the votes cast in the second round of presidential election held on June 14 had been completed.
"So far 10,231 ballot boxes or 45 percent of the whole ballot boxes have been recounted," Noor said.
The total number of ballot boxes used in Afghan presidential runoff was 22,828, he said, adding the recounting process was going on and the election commission would do its best to complete the auditing and recounting process of the votes in its earliest.
Recounting process of the votes cast in June 14 presidential runoff began on July 17 during which the chairman election commission Ahmad Yusuf Nuristani promised to complete the process within three to four weeks. However, the prolonged election process and slow recounting process of the votes would take more time than expected.
Abdullah Abdullah or Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai would succeed the outgoing president Hamid Karzai if the election results announced. Amid the ongoing process of the vote recounting and auditing process, President Hamid Karzai has called for announcing the election results and formation of new government by the end of the month.
President Karzai in meeting with some professors of Kabul universities on Thursday in Presidential Palace expressed concern over the prolonging process of the presidential election, saying delay in the election process would negatively impact the security situation of the country and living conditions of the people, a statement released by his office here said.
