REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Foreign Affairs Ministry and the Women Empowerment and Child Protection Ministry will hold a seminar titled, "Reflection on 20 Years of Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in Indonesia" on Tuesday (Feb. 23).

The seminar will be held at the Nusantara Room, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and will be officially inaugurated by the vice minister for foreign affairs and secretary of the Ministry for Women Empowerment and Child Protection, the foreign ministry revealed in a statement published on its website on Monday.

The year 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA) at the Fourth World Conference on Women (1995) in Beijing, China.

The BPfA serves as a blueprint that identifies various challenges and actions to attain gender equality and women empowerment in 12 critical areas.

Until now, the BPfA has become the main reference for policymakers around the globe, including Indonesia, according to the statement.

Every five years, the United Nations' (UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW)conducts a global review on the implementation of the BPfA by assimilating information from national reviews conducted by states. On March 9-20, 2015, the 59th session of the CSW in New York will be dedicated to reviewing 20 years of implementation of the BPfA.

In addition to organizing global reviews, the UN also urged each state to raise public awareness on gender equality and women empowerment, as well as the role played by the BPfA as one of the global frameworks on women's issues.

The seminar on "Reflection on 20 Years of Implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action in Indonesia" is one of the public advocacy initiatives regarding the 20 years' implementation efforts of the BPfA.

This seminar also aims to raise awareness, attention, and ownership of all stakeholders in relation to the achievements and challenges of BPfA's implementation in Indonesia, as well as building dialogue with the stakeholders for future strategies and steps.

Participants of the seminar will identify the progress made and challenges faced in attaining gender equality and women empowerment at the national level.

The seminar will be divided into four sessions of talk show and Q&A on specific issues such as "History of the Beijing Platform for Action", "The Role and Participation of Women in Politics and Decision Making", "Women in Social and Economic Activities", and "Gender-responsive Laws and Regulations."
