REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government through Ministry of Foreign Affairs conveyed deep condolences over an explosion in Istanbul, Turkey, Tuesday (12/1).
"The Government and people of Indonesia convey condolences to families of victims of the explosion in Sultanahmet area in Hagia Sophia Complex, Istanbul, Turkey, on Tuesday at 10:20 local time," Foreign Minister, Retno LP Marsudi, said in a written statement as received by Republika.co.id Wednesday (13/1).
Foreign Ministry stated, the explosion has caused 11 deaths and 15 people injured. Consulate General of Republic of Indonesia in Istanbul reported that it has not yet received reports of Indonesian citizens who became victims of the incident.
Consulate General would continue to coordinate with relevant authorities in Turkey. Indonesian citizen in Turkey were also advised to avoid crowded places.
"Citizens who will travel to the region are expected to pay attention to the situation," said Foreign Minister.
Currently there are about 708 citizens residing in Istanbul. They were mostly students or citizens who have had a steady job in Turkey.
Turkey government said the majority of victims were from German.
