No Indonesian casualties reported in Nice attack

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in Marseille, France, confirmed that no Indonesian citizens had fallen victim to the terror attacks that took place in Nice, southern France, on Friday.

"Based on the search conducted by the Consulate General in Marseille, so far, no Indonesians had become victims of the terror attacks in Nice," according to a press statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received here, Friday.

On Thursday, at 10:30 p.m. local time, a terror attack took place in a crowded area where people had gathered to watch fireworks in Nice, southern France, to commemorate the French National Bastille Day on July 14.

The attack was carried out using a truck to mow down the crowd at high speed and was followed by gun fire targeting the bystanders.

The French authorities have estimated that at least 77 people lost their lives, and hundreds were injured in the attack.

Shortly after receiving information on the attack, Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi commissioned the Consul General in Marseille, which covers an area of southern France, to ensure the safety of Indonesian citizens in the surrounding area.

Although no Indonesian has fallen victim to the attack, the Consulate General in Marseille continues to coordinate with the local authorities.

The Marseille Consulate staff also checked the medical treatment facilities where all victims were taken shortly after the incident.

Moreover, the consulate staff is also contacting Indonesian citizens, who live in Nice and the surrounding areas.

Based on data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, some 725 Indonesians live in the South of France, with as many as 10 families living in Nice and the surrounding area.

Nice is one of the main tourist destinations in France during the summer months.
