REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Technical and Scientific Affairs Cosmetics Association of Indonesia (Perkosmi), Rijah Sari Dewi, complained the short validity period of halal certificate issued by the Research Institute for Food, Drugs and Cosmetics Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) for cosmetic products. The validity period lasted only for 2 years.
"The validity period that issued for cosmetic products are now irrelevant. Especially, if we consider about the complexity of the problem, it would be better if extended," Dewi told Republika.
Dewi said cosmetic products had high level of complexity due to the raw material variants. She explained first of all, the companies must ensure raw material suppliers which many of them came from other country. Thus, it would add the complexity of the halal certificate extension from the administrative side.
However, Halal Products Assuarance Law, that will be applied in 2019 make the longer validity period of halal certificate. Dewi said that law set the validity period of the halal certificate for four years.
"But, it is still too short. Ideally, the validity period of the certificate of halal cosmetic products is five years," Dewi added.
She hoped the period of validity of the certificate of halal cosmetic products can be extended without reducing the quality. Nevertheless, Dewi claimed until now many cosmetic products which circulated in Indonesia had not been halal certified.
