REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SEMARANG – Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Yogyakarta, Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Universitas Indonesia (UI) are still on the list of Asia’s top 100 Universities. They are also in top 500 world universities from Webometrics version.

The Webometrics University Ranking is a ranking system based on university web presence, visibility and web access, as stated in Wikipedia. Top universities are publishing millions of pages produced by dozens of departments and services, hundreds of research teams and thousands of scholars.

According to Webometrics, in January 2012 UGM settles in 30th, ITB in 33rd, and UI in 53rd. In the list of world best universities, those three universities are in top 500 world universities in the world. UGM is in 249th, ITB is in 277th and UI in 365th.

Since 2004, Webometrics has made the list of university ranking. Until now, there are 20.300 universities in the world listed. Twice a year (January and July), Webometrics announces the list. 

The top five universities in Asia are dominated by Taiwan. Based on Webometrics, National Taiwan University is on the top settled in 42nd. The second position is Tokyo University which is on 46th. National Cheng Kung University Taiwan is on 63rd and Kyoto University on 77th. 

Webometric indicators are provided to show the commitment of the institutions to Web publication. Yet, it is still very rare these indicators are used for the evaluation of the scientific research and the academic performance of universities.
