REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAGETAN - After reaching 5 years, thousands Jati Unggul Nusantara (JUN) trees or prime quality teak trees in Magetan, East Java, are ready to harvest. The harvest of five-year-old teak trees is the first time in Indonesia or even in the world, as usually it takes more than ten years to harvest teak trees.

The first harvest was conducted by Minister of Forestry, Zulkifli Hasan, in Sumursongo, Karas, Magetan, East Java, on Monday. Teak wood is the common name for the tropical hardwood tree species Tectona grandis and its wood products.

For the profit sharing, Hasan said the farmers’ payment should be bigger due to their important role in growing the teak trees. He expects the profit sharing can prosper the crofters. “I hope JUN program will increase people’s welfare,” he added.

The successful JUN program also involves the landowner, investor, official, and Cooperative Housing Wanabakti Nusantara (KPWN). On the profit sharing, the crofter gets 25 percent, 10 percent for landowner, 40 percent for the investor, and 15 percent for KPWN.

Magetan Regent, Sumantri, said, on 2007-2011, the number of planted JUN was 146,293 trees in 59 villages in Magetan. This program involves 1,200 farmers.
