REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, RIAU – Pastor Terry Jones’ act on burning Alquran in front of his church on Saturday sparked some controversies. The Chairman of Riau Indonesian Council of Ulema (MUI), H Mahdini, condemns the act.

“He was wrong and also hurt Muslim all over the world,” Mahdini said on Monday.

Mahdini said US government should not let the action happened. The government should also urge Terry to apologize to Muslim in the world. “If he wanted to protest, he could do other things that did not trigger the anger of Muslim in the world,” he added.

Mahdini also asked Indonesian government to sent protest note to US government over Terry Jones act. Indonesia, which the majority of its population is Muslim, could not be silent over the religious defamation.

Pastor Terry Jones is known for his controversy. He and his 20 followers gathered in front of Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville, Florida, on Saturday to burn the copies of Alquran and an image depicting Muhammad. Terry burned the Alquran in purpose to protest the imprisonment in Iran of a Christian clergyman, Youcef Nadarkhani.
