Indonesia to implement blue economy concept

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BADUNG - Government through the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries determines to implement blue economy concept in Indonesia. Related directly with the life of beach and marine, the concept not only aims to develop the marine and fisheries, but also to support the efficient development with low carbon emission, environmental friendly, and without waste.

Bali becomes one of regions in Indonesia that has implemented the concept through the development of nature conservation and marine tourism. "Bali has applied blue economy concept because the region has many light industries," the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, Sharif Cicip Sutardjo, said recently.

The light industries are the well-managed Bali tourism industries. The approach is by dividing the tourism regions and marine in every coast in Bali. The concept, he said, had been applied in Canada, China, and South Korea. With two per three parts are sea, Indonesia has a big potency in developing the concept. 

"The economy will be stronger because it is environmentally friendly and a good opportunity for the country," he said.

From the data of Coordinating Ministry of Economy, the contribution of marine economy in 2005 reached 22.4 percent while the sub sector of fisheries contributes 3.10 percent to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) 2010 which is followed by the 2.75 growth per year (on 2006-2010).

The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries pour 38.8 billion IDR to Bali, including infrastructures and facilities to develop and manage fisheries, to support the implementation of blue economy.
