Soekarno Hatta Airport rank at 30 place as the biggest passenger traffic and the highest growth of passenger traffic in 2011 in world.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Soekarno Hatta Airport, as the highest growth of passenger traffic in the world, is incapable to counterbalance its traffic as the number of passengers reach 56 million in 2011. The number of passengers is overload, especially in rush hour since the ideal population of the airport is only 22 million.

“This is not good for service,” the Airport Head Authority, Adi Kanrio Dayanun, said on Sunday. The airport authority has re-distributed flight hour and developed new facilities to tackle the problem.

Airport Council International, the international association of the world’s airports based in Genewa, Switzerland, ranks 30 airports in the world on the biggest passenger traffic and the highest growth of passenger traffic in 2011. The result says Soekarno Hatta Airport sits in number one as the highest growth of passenger traffic with the percentage on 19.2 percent. The airport also sits on number 12 for the passenger traffic.

The overcapacity makes the service of the airport less optimal. It affected the flight, especially during the peak hour, the Vice President Corporate Communications PT Garuda Indonesia, Pujobroto, admitted.

“It is hard to conduct on time performance,” Pujobroto added, it was due to the significant growth of flight frequency and inadequate infrastructure. The planes often queue to take off and landing and causes delay.

The airlines must pay some additional costs due to the condition. The plane needs more fuel because of additional time. The movement of plane for landing is also hampered. Pujobroto hopes the growth of passenger traffic can be counterbalanced with the enhancing of infrastructure.

The Director of PT Angkasa Pura II, Tri Suriadjie Sunoko, said Soekarno Hatta Airport reached the highest growth on the last five years. “The average growth could reach 15 percent,” Sunoko said. The growth of Indonesian economy on six percent increases people’s buying power so that many prefer to use plane as transportation.

Sunoko added Angkasa Pura II developed the capacity and infrastructure of Soekarno Hatta Airport. “Our target is the development can be finished on 2014,” he said.

The Head of Public Communication Center in the Ministry of Transportation, Bambang S Ervan, said government and Angkasa Pura II had drafted a new design to face the surge in passenger.  The construction of new terminal and strip are also included on the new design.
