REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian government requires all timber exporters to provide V-legal document issued by Indonesian Timber Legality Verification Bodies for shipments to European Union (EU). Starting on March 3, 2013, EU will implement the V-legal documents as proof of legality licensing system but the measure has been effective in Indonesia since January 1, 2013.
In a written statement, Secretary General at the Ministry of Forestry Hadi Daryanto expects the implementation will not Indonesian shipment of timber to EU. Daryanto said the initial test shipments of timber from Indonesia backed by V-legal documents were conducted in October-December 2012.
Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has signed the agreement on V-legal documents with EU representatives. This agreement is expected to strengthen relations between Indonesia and EU on timber trade. The new legal framework, replacing Indonesia’s BRIK system, is a response to increasingly rigorous anti-illegal timber legislation in key markets.
