REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia as member of the World Economic Forum (WEF) ranks 34th in global competitive index, an increase from 38th position. Infrastructure and government institutions' development drove the increase.

Indonesia's position is still below other Southeast Asian countries, such as Singapore (2nd), Malaysia (20th) and Thailand (31th), but better than Vietnam and Philippines.

WEF believes that Indonesia is still facing many problems in terms of labor efficiency, product innovation and advanced technology. These factors become main pillar determining a country to compete with other countries in the world. WEF conducted survey in 144 countries during period of 2014-2015.

There are 12 pillars used as benchmarks to determine the global competitive index. They are pillars of institution, infrastructure, macro-economic situation, health and primary education, higher education and research, market efficiency, labor efficiency, financial market development, advanced technology, market share, business environment and innovation.

Global competitive index reflects national productivity in general. A high index reflects the competitive level of a country.
