REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The government targets to build power plants of 10 thousand-megawatt capacity per year to meet the demand for 240 thousand megawatts by 2031, according to Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resource Susilo Siswoutomo.
"The power plant construction should not be delayed. If so, we will be in a crisis," he stated on Wednesday.
According to him, the installed capacity of the power plant has reached 50 thousand megawatts. By 2022, the electricity need will increase to 125 thousand megawatts, and by 2031, it will almost double to 240 thousand megawatts.
"It means we have to build new power plants at a rate of 10 thousand megawatts capacity per year," Susilo said here on Wednesday.
The power plants' capacity has been estimated by assuming that the economic growth will remain at five to seven percent, the population growth at 1.1 percent, and the electricity consumption will be growing by eight to nine percent.
According to Susilo, by assuming that the cost of construction is 2 million USD per megawatt, the investment to build a 10 thousand-megawatt power plant will be 20 billion USD per year.
"This investment cost will be provided by the state-owned electricity company, PT PLN, and other private players," he said, adding that the government will formulate a regulation to facilitate such investment and eliminate any obstacle.
The power plants will use coal and natural gases, so Indonesia will no longer export coal, but will instead use this natural resource itself optimally.
"The utilization of hydro power will also be improved," Susilo stated.
Directorate General of Electricity Jarman said that the government will come up with a fast track program (FTP) to construct power plants to meet the rising electricity requirement by 2031.
"We are currently doing FTP 1 and 2. We will make FTP 3 and so on," he said.
