REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Support for the settlement of violence towards Muslim Rohingya comes from every group in Indonesia. An Indonesian Catholic Clergy, Antonius Benny Susetyo, condemns the violence towards Muslim Rohingya. He assessed that the oppression was violation over human right.
"Countries in Southeast Asia and UN should take firm step towards this tragedy," Benny said on Thursday. He also urges Indonesia to send letter of protest to Myanmar.
The Speaker of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) and President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), Marzuki Alie, said firmly that ASEAN had responsibility to solve the problem in Myanmar because ASEAN offered the study center of democracy for Myanmar.
Rohingya crisis, he continued, must be discussed on ASEAN Parliament Summit in upcoming September in Indonesia. Countries in Southeast Asia must give the best solution for Rohingya. He also said that Indonesian government must be actively involved in reaching the settlement for Rohingya.
Meanwhile, the Attaché of Social Culture of Indonesian Embassy to Myanmar, Djumara Supriyadi, said Indonesia could not do much to solve the Rohingya crisis in Rakhine Province. Indonesian Embassy in Myanmar sees the Rohingya crisis as internal problem. Thus, it cannot be interfered with other countries.
The support also comes from one of the biggest Muslim organizations in Indonesia, The Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU). The organization has considered sending humanity mission to Myanmar to ease the Rohingya crisis. PBNU urges Indonesia to take diplomatic step.
The Deputy Secretary General of Human Rights Working Group, Choirul Anam, said Indonesia could give the support and also urge BUrmese democratic figure Aung San Suu Kyi to give more attention to Rohingya.
Indonesia can also take real step by welcoming the Rohingya refugee in Aceh. They came to Indonesia with dozens ships. Indonesia has once repatriated the refugee in 2011. Anam said Indonesia must guarantee the life of Rohingya. They can only be repatriated only after Myanmar guarantees their security.
