REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - Expert of the United Nation (UN), Raquel Rolnik, made a visit to Surabaya to monitor condition of human settlements. Based on their assessment, provision of shelter was feasible if the right to health, education and non-discriminatory were fullfiled.
They visited Boezem Morokrembangan, Gundih village and rented flats(Rusunawa) in Penjaringansari. Rolnik said their arrival aimed to obtain first information from residents regarding the effort to promote decent of housing rights. After that, the team would review and provide input to Indonesian government.
"We are questioning residents about green open space, the rebuilding house program, relocation of residents along the river, waste management and also the land ownership status," Rolnik said on Monday.
Head of Physical Planning and Urban Development Infrastructure, Dwidjajawardana said that local government would provide facilities as recommended by UN in their monitoring results. Local government also targetted to construct ten twin blocks of flats over the next five years.
Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta. As a metropolitan city, Surabaya became the center of economic activity in East Java and surrounding area. Most of the population work in services sector, industry and trade.
