KPK takes over investigations of corruption case in NTT

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUPANG -- The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has taken over investigations of Rp77 billion corruption case in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

KPK took over the case from the NTT High Prosecution Office, which has failed to find a suspect after years of investigations of the alleged corruption of fund belonging to the provincial Education and Non Formal Education Service.

The High prosecution office handed over the case to the KPK in Jakarta on Monday, KPK spokesman Johan Budi said on Tuesday.

The case involved Marthen Luther Dira former officials of the head of the provincial education service in 2007 now regent of Sabu Raijua.

A number of witnessed already questioned by the NTT High Prosecution Office will be summoned again to hear their testimonies on the case, Johan Budi said.

Johan Budi said investigations of the witnesses could also be made in Kupang to make the process easier.

The High Prosecution Office of NTT handed over of the case with evidence in the form of documents packed in three trunks, Johan Budi added.

The losses found by KPK in state fund caused by the corruption totaled Rp59 billion much larger than only Rp2.3 billion found by the investigators from the High Prosecution office.

"KPK, therefore, considers it important to take over investigation of the case," an official of the anti graft agency Agung Ranu Mihardja said in here on Monday.

Marthen Luther Dira Tome, former head of non formal education at the provincial education and culture service said he is ready for questioning anywhere including at KPK in Jakarta.

Marthen , who is now Regent of Sabu Raijua , said the investigation would free him from uncertainty over his alleged involvement in the case.

"Uncertainty has gone for years," he said.

Investigation of the case began in 2008 but no suspect has been named.
