REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesian President Joko Widodo inaugurated the establishment of the Ocean Security Agency (Bakamla) in a bid to safeguard the nation's waters.

The president inaugurated the agency during the commemoration of Nusantara (Archipelago) 2014 Day in Kotabaru of South Kalimantan on Monday.

Cabinet Secretary Andi Wijayanto said as quoted on the institution's website that establishment of the agency is based on Presidential Regulation No.178/2014 about Bakamla.

The agency is assigned the key task of patrolling and maintaining the safety and security of Indonesian waters.

"The establishment of Bakamla indicates a new era of synergy for ocean security operations, which are supported by the integrated Early Warning System and the Law Enforcement Unit," Andi stated.

The Bakamla has evolved from the Ocean Security Coordination Agency (Bakorkamla), which was established based on the joint decree issued by the security and defense minister, transportation minister, finance minister, justice minister, and attorney general who agreed to establish Bakorkamla for Ocean territory and Join Operation Command for Ocean Security.

After the Presidential Regulation No.178/2014 was passed, it was renamed from Bakorkamla to Bakamla and has a greater role in securing Indonesia's ocean territory.
