REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANJUNGPINANG -- Iwan Kurniawan, a legal practitioner in Riau Islands province, has proposed that the government give lethal injection to drug kingpins to have a deterrent effect.

"Execution by firing squad is not severe because then drug convicts do not feel the suffering of people who are addicted to drugs. Therefore, I suggest that the government administer lethal injection on drug kingpins," Kurniawan said here on Wednesday (11/3).

According to him, narcotics and psychotropic dealers deserve death by lethal injection. It sounds cruel, but drug dealers should know and feel the suffering of those who lost their future, even their lives, because of consuming narcotic drugs.

"Execution by lethal injection will be a lesson for drug dealers who have not been touched by the law," he noted.

After opening a working meeting on health affairs in Batam last Thursday, Health Minister Nila Farid Moeloek said Indonesia's productive generation was at great risk as a large number of young people were addicted to drugs or died of narcotics abuse every day.

"Drug addiction has been posing a threat to Indonesia's productive generation. Narcotics have killed many young people," Moeloek noted.

According to her, the situation in Indonesia had become increasingly complex as the number of youths who were addicted to drugs or died of drug abuse was huge.

"Narcotics abuse is causing severe harm to the health of our people. It also hampers their economic growth and cripples all efforts to improve their welfare," the Health Minister remarked.

She also supported the death penalty of drug lords and traffickers, which is in line with President Joko Widodo's efforts to combat drug menace.

Moeloek pointed out that death sentence to drug dealers was not against humanity as the extent of damage caused by dealers was quite serious and put the country at a disadvantage. Moreover, she added, life sentence did not seem to have any deterrent effect on drug dealers.
