REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDA ACEH -- The westernmost Indonesian province of Aceh is prone to arms smuggling as it has a vast territory, stated Chief of the Iskandar Muda Regional Military Command Major General Agus Kriswanto.

"Aceh is susceptible to arms and drugs smuggling activities," he noted here on Tuesday.

The province has several small ports and narrow pathways, which are believed to be used as entry points by arms and drugs smugglers, he pointed out.

To deny entry into the small ports and narrow pathways, they must be supervised intensively, he said.

Therefore, he emphasized that the Regional Military Command was prepared to assist the Indonesian Police and Navy in securing the Aceh waters.

"To secure the waters, the Iskandar Muda Regional Military Command has deployed high-speed motorboats that are able to support the movement of soldiers in the waters of the westernmost Indonesian province," he explained.

Only recently, the Regional Military Command received a speedboat from the directorate of transportation supplies at the Indonesian Army. The 17-meter-long boat has a cruising speed of 25 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles.

"The last speedboat is the most sophisticated vessel that the Iskandar Muda Regional Military Command has ever received," he added.
