REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Officials of the Philippine government including the Justice Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry went to the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) today, Wednesday, July 29.They filed a reciprocal agreement called the Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA), which consisted of five request.
Head of Legal Information Center (Kapuspenkum) of AGO, Tony Tribagus Spontana said, the petition was asking for permission to give access to the documents of death row inmate case, Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, and checked directly.
"For three other requests outside of the AGO, associated with the Police, Customs, Airport Autority associated with the airport in which she was putting it (drugs)," he said at the AGO, on Wednesday, July 29.
Tony explained, MLA was an agreement in level of ASEAN countries. Every citizen obliged to appoint an institution as the central authority, which in Indonesia and the Philippines both the Law and Human Rights Ministry.
Therefore, said Tony, if there were requests for legal assistance must go through the central authority. After that, the central authority distributed it to a particular ministry on demand. "MLA in the evaluation process in Law and Human Rights Ministry (Kemenkumham)," said Tony.
Furthermore, Tony suggested, their intentions were also to visit the prison Wirogunan, Yogyakarta to meet with Mary Jane on Friday, July 31. According to Tony, their arrival to prison Wirogunan was an ordinary visit.
The Attorney General has ordered Attorney on Yogyakarta Special Region in order to coordinate with the Regional Office of Kemenkumham, Police, and National Narcotics Agency (BNN). Attorney General requested that their arrival facilitated.
